Hansberry Square

Location: Chicago

Type: New Construction
Use: 181 Mixed Income Units
Cost: $50 million
Status: Completed 2007.

Built on the site of the former Robert Taylor Homes public housing project, Hansberry Square’s community of 181 residential rental units and 73 owner-occupied units have transformed the surrounding neighborhood. The two and three story residential buildings on the 11.5 acre site orbit around an inviting park space and a 4,000 square-foot community center, providing low income and market rate renters and buyers the opportunity to live in one of Chicago’s most dynamic new Master Planned communities. The redevelopment required the reconstruction of the street grid on the formerly roadless site, as well as the creation of a variety of semi-public and private courtyards and well-scaled blocks that amalgamate the new community into the larger civic fabric of the city.
