AROUND THE CORNER: 3208 N. Sheffield Avenue, Chicago

Brinshore is partnering with Thresholds in a sweeping, environmentally friendly renovation that will create housing for low-income people with disabilities as well as businesses to support the project.

Brinshore is partnering with Thresholds, one of Chicago’s most respected service providers for people with mental disabilities, to renovate 3208 N. Sheffield Avenue (formerly the Diplomat Hotel) in Chicago’s Lakeview neighborhood into a state-of-the-art, environmentally friendly, affordable supportive housing development for adults at risk of homelessness or with severe mental illness. 51 studio apartments will include a bathroom and kitchenette, with 12 fully accessible. Amenities include laundry, resident lounges, community spaces, conference rooms, a landscaped courtyard with an art wall and planting, a gallery in the entry, warming kitchen and storage spaces.

The Chicago Botanic Garden and Thresholds are collaborating to train residents in sustainable urban growing methods. A planned Thresholds-managed flower shop on the ground level will employ Thresholds’ clients and building residents and will harvest herbs and flowers from the roof garden.  The project was the highest scoring Federal Home Loan Bank of Chicago Affordable Housing Program (AHP) application and was recently featured in its annual newsletter.
