City Celebrates Groundbreaking of New Development in Southwest Houston
Houston, Texas – City of Houston officials will welcome Connect South Apartments, 6440 Hillcroft Street, Houston TX 77081, to add to the growing list of new and affordable rental communities contributing to the existing housing inventory for greater Houston.
“We are excited to add for Houstonians that has sustainable design to benefit one of the most diverse cities in the country,” said Mayor Sylvester Turner. “Developments like this help fill the housing gap, supports smart ways of growing master planned communities, and creates more opportunities for Houstonians to succeed.”
Connect South, planned as a 77-unit affordable rental community, will serve families at or below 80% of the- area’s median income (AMI). Located in the Gulfton Complete Community, the development is the first phase of a 3.2-acre master planned mixed-income property. The community will focus on creating high-quality housing and community wellness opportunities. The space will offer one-,two-, and three-bedroom residential units located above nearly 7,000 square feet of retail space and parking access. Intentionally designed to meet the unique needs of this multi-cultural and multi-generational community, heavy emphasis was placed on creating a walkable community.
“Investing in communities that are centrally located places District J at an advantage for leveraging mutually beneficial partnerships” said Councilman Edward Pollard. This joint venture project between the City of Houston, Brinshore Development LLC, and My Connect Community, is a collaborative effort. The City of Houston contributed $11.9 million of Hurricane Harvey Community Development Block Grant Disaster Recovery (CDBG-DR17) funds toward the total $33.5 million cost of the development. Funds committed by the City of Houston will be used primarily for construction costs and acquisition expenses. CBDG-DR17 funds are awarded by the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development, to provide affordable rental units for underserved households in the city of Houston and are administered by HCD’s Multifamily Program.
People with special housing needs and housing instability will be given special consideration for access to these units,” said Director Keith Bynam, Housing and Community Development (HCD), “The development is ideally located with walkable proximity to high quality healthcare providers, a public library, big box grocery stores, and public transit, which is ideal for housing developments of this kind.” Not only will the Development community space available but it will also provide outreach services and education to the tenants. Connect South’s construction team includes forward-thinking project developers with plans to bring a more holistic and collaborative approach to community development.
