Manson Place for Parent Scholars Celebrates Breaking Ground in Houston's Third Ward
HOUSTON (Dec. 14, 2023) – Brinshore Development, Family Scholar House, and The MolinaCares Accord, in collaboration with Molina Healthcare of Texas, recently celebrated the groundbreaking of Manson Place for Parent Scholars (Manson Place), located in Houston’s Third Ward.
Notable remarks were given by City Council District D Representative Dr. Carolyn Evans-Shabazz, Houston Housing Authority President, and CEO, David A. Northern, Sr. A representative of the office of U.S. Congresswoman Sheila Jackson-Lee, 18th District – Texas, Houston City presented a certificate of congressional recognition to Family Scholar House. Mayor Turner was also in attendance of this momentous occasion.
The program, funded by a $150,000 grant from MolinaCares and based on the successful model of Family Scholar House, seeks to end the cycle of poverty by focusing on education for the entire family and providing pathways to self-sufficiency. This type of two-generation housing model for parent scholars has at a minimum 60% children, who are newborn to 5 years old, and require early childhood education opportunities before enrollment in a public school.
“This is an incredible opportunity for Brinshore to collaborate with two mission-oriented national organizations,” Richard Sciortino, co-founder and principal of Brinshore Development said. “We look forward to Manson Place becoming a beacon of hope and prosperity in Houston’s historic Third Ward for generations to come.”
“Family Scholar House is excited to expand our work in Houston by partnering with Brinshore Development to provide affordable housing with wrap-around supportive services for student parents. Working together with community partners, this will not only accelerate our participants' path to self-sufficiency but also strengthen families and the community they call home.”
“MolinaCares is dedicated to improving the health and well-being of underserved communities by funding meaningful, measurable, and innovative programs and solutions that impact the lives of those in need,” said Chris Coffey, plan president of Molina Healthcare of Texas. “We are grateful to partner with Family Scholar House and Brinshore to provide this vital resource to our neighbors in Houston.”
Family Scholar House is currently serving 261 families from 63 zip codes in Houston. The timeline for completion of the development is 2025.
